A stolen post, $215 jeans, and caffeinated goodness.

I’m stealing my post that I wrote on RW, because after writing it, I realized it was basically a novel, and good enough amazing, so I should put on my blog. Not to mention, today is a perfect day for a post because l because I got called off of work!! I woke up this morning to dreary skies, rain, thunder, and lightning. So I apologize if you’re a college RW forumite, and you read my blog, because you’re getting *slightly shortchanged! (*I changed it a bit. PLUS, see end of post!! And pictures!!)

Yesterday I went to this store called Opitz – it’s sort of like Overstock.com, only you can physically go there. I used to love it in high school because they would get tons of Delia’s clothing and they always had my sizes (for once!), and I actually still really like *some* of their clothes. They get a lot of True Religion and 7s and crazy expensive jeans, but the fantastic thing is – EVERYTHING IS AT LEAST 70% OFF. Wednesdays are like the restocked-secret-mailing-list-members-only day.. and THIS Wednesday was the start of the “Hey you college kids.. come stock your dorms!” advertised in the mailer. So, stock we did! Hah.. actually not that much. I got two pairs of jeans, a sweet shirt, and a 10 piece bakeware set for our suite.

(don’t ask me why I decided to wear a skirt..?)

(World Wildlife Fund!)

(Baileys.. from Delia’s)

(Urban Behavior. Not gonna lie.. I’ve never heard of that brand.)

(hah! “Tools of the Trade”! It will work just fine for me!)

I struggled with this whole suite deal before, because I feel like I’m the only one out of the 6 of us who doesn’t spend (or have money to spend) like crazy on all these name brand things. One girl’s coming with all this William’s Sonoma stuff, and I’m like “Yes! Target!”. But I’m starting to feel better because now I can feel like I’m contributing. I’m also bringing our 2nd Magic Bullet, which we haven’t opened yet. 😀 The bake set was new.. but only $10! (YESS 70% off!) And then my mom came home last night with a basically new set of flatware (forks, spoons, knives.. that’s called flatware, right?) from her friend who just got themselves a newer new set. AH! Feeling better.

My mom and I went BACK to Opitz today, and I found the GREATEST pair of jeans.

(Paige. “Premium Denim”. My legs are smiling.)

Can you see that price tag?! $215. And I got them for $65. Hah! And $65 is already a “splurge” for me on jeans! I figure that everyone is entitled to one pair of really good, really nice, feel good jeans. And these will be mine. 😀 I haven’t gone shopping for me shopping in what feels like forever, so today I’m a happy camper. I also love good pockets (oh.. cause that makes me unique..) so these ones scored double points. Well maybe not the black pair, but the other two..

I would also like to say that I feel stellar about my running and the way things are going right now. Despite the groin injury/tear/pull that I was struggling with (that I would say is about 90% healed right now), I am really enjoying running and life in general. Last week was rough – really rough – but I can look back on it now and say “Erika. Quit crying and T.T.F.U. You only get one life so you better make the most of it!”

(T.T.F.U. is pretty much my favorite acronym, and I suggest you all incorporate it into your daily vernacular. (Is that a proper use of vernacular? Oh boy.))

(both mom and I are devoted Asics-for-lifers. RoadID is a must! Safety first kids.)

So yes. Running. Strong, hard, easy, enjoyable. I ran a few sub 7s on my run yesterday without realizing it, and I’ll be running probably 9:30s when I go with my mom this afternoon. I’m running the Urban Wildland Half Marathon on Saturday.. at 7:00am. Yikes!

I am pretty sure I wont be racing it, just coming off this tear and all, but none the less I am SO EXCITED. From everything I’m heard, it’s a wicked race. (Gotta start incorporating that Boston vocab!) It’s quoted as “Minnesota’s Green Race” which is probably the coolest thing I’ve seen so far. This is quoted from their website:

The Urban Wildland Half Marathon & 5K is a no-waste race! All refuse from the event is either composted, recycled, or reused.

Not only is the no-waste effort kinder to our environment, it helps to meet one of the key goals of the Urban Wildland Half Marathon & 5K: to raise awareness about the environment and to practice the earth-friendly values that are taught through Wood Lake’s environmental education program.

Did I say yet that I love life?

(Anddd it has a built in coffee pot!)

Also on the list of purchases yesterday at Opitz a new coffee/espresso maker. My mom is THRILLED. I’m hoping this was a really good brand, because despite being like 70% off it was still over $100! We tried it out today for the first time and it’s AMAZING.

(hah mom you look surprised. You’re too cute.)

We did a CostCo adventure today, and no joke – every single time we’re there my mom looks to see if they have an espresso machine. She has been waiting and waiting and waiting, and they’ve never carried one (except for online, and it was like $$$). What did they have today? The day after we bought an espresso machine?

Well too bad. We like the one we bought better. Plus, being black and sliver, it matches the rest of our appliances. 😉 And I just thought I’d throw this in here, since the blog world seems like it’s just discovering these amazing goodnesses..

(Amongst other bulk goodness. I actually think that box of Rice Krispys has been down there since I was like a freshman in high school.)

What the heck took you guys so long!? For those of you that have a CostCo.. they sell them in bulk – Clif bars, Lara bars, those nasty coco type Lara Bars, Power bars, Balance bars, the new Trio bars – they’ve got em’ all! Just a heads up!

WOW! What a post for a Thursday! Back to work tomorrow. Hope everyone is having a great week!

puttin fish in the tin..

The Tin Fish. 11-4, 4-close, or a split, is where you’ll find me basically every day. That’s pretty much the story of my life, but I LOVE it!

(sorry for the crappy shadow!)

Since I talk about my job all the time, I thought I’d share a little bit of it’s greatness with those of you that can’t come to Minneapolis and experience it for yourself. (Although, you might be able to do a second-best: You can find our extended Tin Fish family in San Diego, Imperial Beach, and San Francisco in California, Mukilteo in Washington, and Newburgh and Evansville in Indiana! I can’t say they’ll be as good as my TF, but like I said, a close second. 😉 )

(view of the TF from the bike path coming around to the bridge)

My Tin Fish (Which is actually Nooli and Sheff’s Tin Fish – they’re the owners) is on the north east end Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis. Out of all our lakes, Calhoun has always been my favorite.. Harriet seems more of like a ‘take the kiddos in the Burly’ or ‘Sunday morning walk with the fam’ kind of lake. Isles is where you go to Ooh and Aah the amazing homes and architecture and landscapes. Nokomis.. well the only thing I can associate with Nokomis is XC and meets and the good ol’ Miller Relays. Calhoun is for everyone. You will find people there from every walk of life at any time on any given day.

(running orders)

And believe me.. we see ALL those people from all those different walks of life at the Tin Fish. It makes my job so much fun bringing out food to these different people and hearing different stories, different accents, and different faces. I love that I get to be outside (and inside – while I’m not running food). I love that I bike to work (because it takes just as long to drive and find a parking spot). I love that I make tips (hah greedy! But this chick needs money for school)! 😉 I love that we all eat a family dinner after close, and that ice cream is actually amazing (and not to mention free). I love my little 15 minute bike ride home in the dark, and looking across the lake at the downtown skyline – I have the best commute ever. I love having visitors, and when friends, family, or just people I know come to eat. I love when it’s busy. I love when people are surprised by such a loud voice (mine) coming out of such a little person. I love carding people when I pour up a Fat Tire. I love my boss(es) – the owners. I love our little Tin Fish Family. 😀

(the menu board)

Things I don’t like? When Mary takes Joseph’s order (although Mary sounds nothing like Joseph), despite the fact that she ordered Mahi tacos, and I brought a Lake Calhoun Lunch. I don’t like when said Mary EATS half of said Lake Calhoun Lunch, and then comes and whines “but I ordered a Mahi Mahi taco!” I don’t like when people don’t listen for their name to be called, or worse yet, listens, but gives no sign of “here I am”. I can’t feel your eyes looking at me! And I don’t accept the excuse “I couldn’t hear you”, because I’ve been told on numerous occasions that you can hear me out on the docks, and my friend can hear me from her condo balcony across the street. I don’t like when people assume we’re just a concession stand. I don’t like when people assume we are responsible for keeping the toilet paper supplied in the bathroom on the other side of the building that is managed by the park board. I don’t like when people say “bring out some more tartar sauce too..”, what happened to please? I don’t like when it’s slow. I don’t like when people get mad at us for the food-with-drink rule in our liquor license.. we didn’t make the rules!\

(delivery! i ❤ the kids.. just not when they’re playing tag around the table)

It’s so funny.. I work usually 6, sometimes 7 days a week. But on my days off, I always end up there anyways! Either to get ice cream with friends (or my mom, in case of the picture below), or just stopping by on a run. I can’t think of a day I’ve had off when I wasn’t there.

(madre y yo)

In summary, the Tin Fish is amazing. And you should need to go. Just make sure you’re in line by 9:00 or you will be turned away. 😛 This is my 2nd year on the Tin Fish team.. and I can’t wait till next summer to be back!

(walleye taco, iced tea, and I think that’s a salmon sandwich in the background..)

(enjoying lunch on a summer day!)

(view from the patio across Calhoun at sunset)

The SkyMall never-needed-but-always-wanted Best Of Awards!

Mmm.. so either a) my Boston trip wasn’t too interesting, or b) everyone else is really busy. But I’m going to have to think it’s A because my trip post had plenty of “hits”.. just no comments. 😦 I’ll save the tears for later.

In the mean time.. I know you’ve all perused the SkyMall magazine at some point in time (unless you’ve never been on a plane, in which case, you’re in for a treat the first time you get to snag a peak at one of these bad boys). 😉 ANYWHO.. here is are my top picks for the best of SkyMall! (Sorry in advance for the glare!)

Infinity Trinity Knot Pendant – so this one is actually serious.. I really like this design. I wouldn’t buy the pendant, but the design is something I’ve actually studied.. and like.. a lot.

This page was a 2 for 1!

Marshmallow Shooter – this reminds me of a black and orange potato gun I used to have when I was like 8. I got it at the dollar store. Why would you need to shoot marshmallows, and what would you shoot them at?

Pet Observation Porthole – Or as I would like to call it, the “Doggy Dome Viewfinder”. I think my name is better. I’m all for animal rights, but I think you should just take your dog for a walk, instead of: build a fence, cut a hole in said fence, and install a plastic dome bubble for dog to poke nose in. All for $29.95, S&H not included.

Mini Donut Maker – mini donuts in just 50 seconds! But the true question is, how MANY mini donuts are you getting in that 50 seconds. One? Ten? I’m imagining a production line like in I Love Lucy where she gets too many chocolates and is stuffing them in her mouth and down her shirt. Too funny! I guess it’s true though.. there aren’t a lot of places to buy mini donuts unless you’re at the State Fair or Valley Fair or something.

The Cookie Diet – OK guys.. I’ve seen this on TV so it’s not like it’s exclusive to the SkyMall mag.. but seriously? The only thing that would make this work is that you’re just limiting calories by solely eating these pre packaged cookies.. but you’re missing out on about a billion and one nutrients and vitamins and minerals. Healthy? I think not.

SkyRest Travel Pillow – I actually fully promote this product. And gramps in the photo. I used to sleep like this all the time on car trips and on the plane when I brought my own pillow, and it was actually way comfy. Rock on grandpapa.. rock on.

The Green Line, JP’s, Newbury & Boylston, and a lil ABP..

Well since there is no FREE WIRELESS at Logan Airport, I figured I might as well begin writing my post.. since I have TWO hours until I board the plane to Chicago (hah – what a complainer!). My flight was delayed due to “bad weather” in Chi.. (light rain = bad? Really? Really really? OK.) so I will now have just 30 minutes to make my connecting flight from Chicago to Minneapolis. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that there are no more delays.. I have to work tomorrow!!

Anywho.. let’s do a lil breakdown of my trip in Bean Town:

Day One: got to watch some Olympic coverage on the plane (!!), love the “SaniSeats” in the Chicago Airport (although not their lack of free wi-fi), and of course my lover – Purel. Arrive, navigate the T over to Northeastern, check in, meet Lauren (one of the girls I’ll be rooming with next year, and my actual ROOMmate!!), a run on the Charles, little walking tour including JP Licks (!!), sleeeeep in a way hot dorm (thank god not where I’M living next year) with no AC or fan.

Day Two: early run on the Charles (out the door before 6am!), a day PACKED with orientation hoo-ha (do people actually use that word? I never have.. until now.), night at the Marino Center, sleep. ((That sounds like a low key, non-eventful/stressful day. WAY WRONG. After I got back from my run, between breakfast and the Marino Center at night there was literally at most like 15 minutes of free time. Most of the information sessions were just telling us things we already knew, which was expected, but they did a good job.))

Day Three: early run on the Charles with BRIAN (aka BigB on the Road – see blogroll!) plus a little solo adventure around the Fens, yet another jam-packed-non-stop day of orientation goodness until 3:00. I bought a NU Jacket!! Even though it’s like 85 degrees now, I remember what it was like when I was here in January. And that jacket was freakin’ cute. Check out from orientation ~3:00, take the T down to the Colonnade, check in, and explore the Pru (Prudential Center for all you non-Bostonians. I feel so official already), explore Newbury, explore Boylston, dinner from Trader Joe’s, remembering how much I LOVE Boston!

Day Four: Finally a day all to myself. Slept in as much as I felt like it, run on the Charles, lunch from Shaw’s, try out the fitness center/pool at the Colonnade, more exploring around town. Walked through Downtown, the Financial District, a touch of China Town, eventually made it down to the Haymarket area for a lil Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market. Consumed two huge McDonalds ice cream cones along the way (what the hell happened to size small!?), took the T back because by that time it was already 10:00! Oops!

Day Five: Rest day from running, took lunch from Shaw’s down to NU for a last goodbye, dropped off course descriptions and class syllabi (plural of syllabus. Hmm..) so this credit transfer can be straightened out (at the moment they’re not taking 2 of my classes! And 2 are “pending evaluation”. No way Jose!), talked with my hermana about how excited I am and she needs to come visit ASAP, got a last and final JP Licks on my last day (3 times in 5 days. Better than 4 times in 5 days like last January!), a last goodbye to Newbury, smoothies from Boloco, saw the Marathon exhibit at the Bos. Public Library (not as cool as I was expecting.. bummer!), annnnnnd back to the Colonnade to get my stuff to go. The bellhop told me there was no way in heck that I’d get on the T during rush hour with my bag.. little did HE know that I’m pretty capable of squeezing in the smallest spaces ever (can’t say the same about my bag..) and I made it just fine. Transferring onto the Blue Line was a bit of a hassle since I was way in the back of a car, and had to make it to the middle so I could get off on the left side. East coast people are nice though (despite popular belief from the Mid West..) and helped me out.

So basically I’m in love all over again and I can’t wait till I get back out here. It has been hard for me to stay committed to being excited about moving to Boston – I only have one year secured at NU, and after that things are up in the air. Financially.. I’m scared outta my mind. But being here made me feel like it’s worth all the doubts and fears I have.. and what I get out of it will be WAY worth it.

I didn’t take as many pictures as I thought I would.. and I’m just realizing I’m not in ANY of them! But I don’t really do the whole hold-cam-in-front-of-face-CHEESE! thing.. so there you go. I love Boston. I Love Northeastern. I’m pumped about Architecture there. I’m pumped about my roommates and suite. I’m pumped about being a Husky (and not a Gopher!). I’m pumped about the Boston Marathon. I. CAN’T. WAIT.

..at my home away from home! I hopped off the T this afternoon around 2:30, hit Au Bon Pain, and MAN it feels good to be back! I’ll be staying on campus at Northeastern tonight and tomorrow night, and then Tuesday and Wednesday night I’ll be at the Colonnade just across from the Prudential Center! Thursday night will be spent on the plane. Gotta love those red eye flights… NOT!

I already went for my first run along the Charles (and found the path just fine this time! Thanks Brian & Teddy!), plus a walking tour which included a JP Licks stop!

Expect a monster post with tons of pictures, plus a bonus post with my favorites from the Sky Mall mag 😉

getting back on track..

..and NO, I don’t mean in the way that it seams everyone else has been talking about. I don’t need a diet cleanse after the 4th of July weekend (although, there were some yummy delicious things involved!).. I’m just kind of at the point where I just need a life cleanse.

Hah – wow. Could I sound more dramatic? I’m not trying to be.. but hopefully putting this in writing will be a good step in moving forward. (And because I do everything in photo form.. it will of course be accompanied with pictures. Some of which may be irrelevant.)

Sperly’s Lovin Life Lowdown: Phase 1- Detox

Everyone has bad habits.. whether we admit to them or not. And if you don’t like the words “bad habit”, lets just say there are some things we could all do better at in life – I have my fair share of those things. Maybe this should be Phase 2.. because Phase 1 would have been like recognition and claiming responsibility or something along those lines.. but I didn’t think of that till now, so too bad. 😉 Here are the things I’ll be workin on for the next… while.

1. Sleeping. I’ve accomplished all of my new years resolutions, except for getting back on track with a decent sleep schedule. I used to go to bed after the sports on the local news, and ever since 2nd semester last winter I’ve been staying up until like 12:30 or 1:00.. or later. And then waking up still at 7:00 because my body is incapable of sleeping past sunrise. I’ve had to reset/change my sleeping patterns before due to a new job or a different class schedule.. and for some reason this last effort has efficiently FAILED. Work on it.

2. Letting go of my mom’s relationship decision. I have no say in who she dates. Why she dates them. What they do. When they do it. I don’t get to pick if she choses to get married again. My parents aren’t getting back together and I know that. Missing our family 4 and wanting it back are two different things. I can miss it, but they’re not getting back together. I may not love my mom’s boyfriend, but I love my mom. Work on it.

3. Letting go of my own relationship non-relationship stress. After my last relationship ended I was really enjoying being single.. but to be honest I’m not exactly feelin’ that right now. I’m torn because I want a relationship, yet at the same time I only let myself get to a certain point before I close myself off and don’t allow one to develop. My outlook on relationships has been jaded, and I don’t know how to get around that. And especially considering my current situation – I’ll be leaving in two months. That’s not time to start anything serious. But I don’t know that I’m enjoying being on my own. Aah! God knows what’s up, and he’s got a plan, so I need to leave it to him and let life take it’s course. Work on it.

(This photo is from 4th of July 1 year ago when I was up at my bf’s grandparent’s house on Lake Michigan. It was so much fun! We’re still friends. 🙂 )

4. Stay excited about going out to Boston. I do love the school. I do love the city. I love architecture and I know I’m passionate about it. Every now and then though, I remember that we can’t really afford it, and I’m leaving behind a full ride at the U of MN. And then I remember that I’m going to be hundreds and hundreds of miles away from my home and my family. And then I think about how much I’ll miss the lakes, and how bored I’ll be running the Charles (I clearly have my priorities figured out). I need to find a way to stay excited about this, because if I don’t go now, I never will. Work on it.

5. Being a better person all around, to everyone. I feel like I’ve been more irritable/fake with people than I used to be, and that’s NOT ME. I’ve still kept my promise (to myself) about not talking about people behind their backs, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been thinking just as (if not more) bitchy thoughts them (whoever “them” happens to be at the moment). It didn’t use to (used to?) take a conscious effort to be a legitimately nice person to everyone. Despite how much I gritted my teeth, I could always find the good in someone, and remind myself that God made them too – we’re all human. Maybe I’m just irritable because of the major sleep debt I’ve been in? Maybe more sleep will help? I sure hope so. Work on it.

I’m only going with 5.. because I feel like more than that and I’m being over ambitious.. I like setting goals in smaller steps. Plus, everything is better in odd numbers (flowers, candles, cookies) (OK I lied.. being the 3rd wheel SUCKS).

I honestly have no clue where this post is headed, and what a future follow-up post will be, but there you go.

In Other News..

I’m flying out to Boston on Sunday (wayyyyy early in the AM), and I’ll be there through Thursday. (Or Friday – take your pick. My flight gets in at like 12:08 in the morning on Friday.) I’m SO EXCITED! Sunday/Monday I’ll be staying in the dorms on campus, and Tuesday/Wednesday I’ll be staying at the Colonnade Hotel. I’m not sure which one I’m more excited about – the Colonnade is pretty sweet!! It’s right by campus though, so I’ll be getting used to commuting from “home”.

I had my highest mileage week.. um, ever.. last week. 72! Unintentional, but felt fine. (And please [do I even need to say this?] – no anonymous “you shouldn’t run that much” comments. It won’t get posted, and you’ll be wasting your time.)

(There’s a ME in there.. running at Harriet. I love these photos.)

My mom’s BF is coming.. TOMORROW. For 2.5 weeks. Please see above for my feelings on that.

(bahhaaha.. kidding. Hope mom can take the joke.)

Well, I’m gonna have to sign off here folks. Time for a shower and my bathroom cleaning/laundry duties for the night. I apologize for posting so infrequently, but I’ve been working every day (look forward to a very photographic TF post coming soon!), + running, + friends and family, + prepping for Boston, and I just don’t have a ton of free time. Be back soon!
